Girls’ Football Coaching in Taunton: What’s Available and How to Choose

Explore local football options and consider which coaching environment suits your daughter.

If you live in or near Taunton and you’re looking for extra football support for your daughter, the options can feel scattered. There are local clubs with girls’ or mixed teams, senior women’s sides, and larger coaching centres. Each has a different role. This guide gives a clear overview of what’s available in the Taunton area and how to decide what might suit your daughter — whether she is just starting, already playing regularly, or needing more individual attention.

01

Club and team football in the Taunton area

Most girls begin (and continue) their journey through local clubs. These provide regular training, matches, teammates and a sense of belonging. Some of the active options include:

Bishops Lydeard FC – Girls’ Youth Teams: A local club offering dedicated girls’ youth teams. An option for players who want to play and train in a girls-only team environment close to Taunton.

Staplegrove FC – Youth Teams: Staplegrove run youth teams, giving girls the chance to play and develop alongside boys in a grassroots club setting. Check the current teams and age groups with the club.

Huish Tigers: Another established local youth option in the wider Taunton area, providing team football and regular training for young players, including girls’ teams.

Senior pathway – Staplegrove Ladies and Taunton Town Women: For older players, Staplegrove Ladies and Taunton Town Women (the Peahens) compete in the Somerset County Women’s League. These teams form part of the local senior pathway. Clubs can confirm age eligibility and arrangements.

These clubs do important work. They give girls regular games, friendships, and the experience of being part of a team. For many players that is exactly what they need and enjoy. Teams, availability and eligibility can change; contact each provider for current details.

02

Larger coaching centres

Taunton Talent Centre offers football development alongside grassroots football. Group sessions can suit girls who enjoy training with others and want additional technical or game-related work outside of their club. Ask the centre about current age groups, session formats, group sizes and individual support.

03

Where independent individual coaching fits

Club football and larger centres can be valuable for team play, matches and social development, but coaches must divide their attention across the group. The individual feedback available varies between sessions and providers.

Some girls thrive in those environments. Others need more individual attention — clearer technical priorities, help rebuilding confidence, or a quieter space to work on specific parts of their game without constant comparison.

This is where independent coaching sits. It is not a replacement for club football or larger centres. It is additional support designed to help a player develop skills she can use in her existing team sessions and matches.

04

How to decide what your daughter needs

Useful questions to consider:

Is she mainly looking for more time on the ball and clearer technical help?

Has her confidence dropped, or does she go quiet in larger or mixed groups?

Does she already have a club she enjoys, or is she still looking for a team?

How much capacity does she (and the family) have each week alongside school?

Would she benefit from working on one clear focus at her own pace?

If she is happy in her club team and simply wants a bit more technical input, a good group session or short block of individual coaching can be enough. If confidence has dipped, if she finds busy or mixed environments difficult, or if she has specific skills she wants to improve, personalised coaching may be helpful.

What STAR offers in Taunton

STAR Development Centre provides independent girls’ football coaching in Taunton (and also in Bridgwater and Wellington). We work with girls aged 5–18 and deliberately sit alongside club football rather than competing with it.

Our focus is individual development: getting to know the player, agreeing clear priorities with her, and giving her focused time and attention. We offer flexible one-to-one coaching, structured individual programmes with progress reviews, and smaller age-appropriate group sessions.

We are also an Approved Autism Friendly Coaching provider and pay particular attention to girls who need a quieter starting point or different ways of receiving information.

Everything begins with a free 30-minute assessment. There is no payment or commitment. It is simply a chance for your daughter to meet the coach, try some activities suited to her, and for you both to see whether the approach feels right. Venues are arranged individually and confirmed in advance.

06

A balanced way to look at it

Local clubs such as Bishops Lydeard FC girls’ teams, Staplegrove FC, Huish Tigers and the senior sides at Staplegrove Ladies and Taunton Town Women provide team environments, matches and friendships. Taunton Talent Centre offers additional group coaching opportunities.

Independent coaching like STAR can add the individual focus, confidence support and technical clarity that help some players get more out of their club experience.

The best combination is often both: a positive club side and some additional coaching that is properly tailored to the player.

If you would like help working out what might suit your daughter in the Taunton area, we are happy to start with an open conversation or a free assessment. No pressure — just a practical discussion about her game and what would help right now.
