OUR APPROACH · GIRLS AGED 5–18

WE START
WITH HER.

Her first touch. Her decisions. Her confidence. We get to know the player, then build the coaching around what will help her game.

Individual development in Somerset · Alongside her club football

THE DETAIL MATTERSSomething clear to try. Time to make it her own.

THE STAR DEVELOPMENT CYCLE

A plan that moves
with the player.

Observe, understand, plan, coach, challenge, apply and review. We return to this cycle as she develops, keeping her involved in what comes next.

01

Observe & assess · Understand

Get to know her game.

We ask what she enjoys, what feels difficult and what she wants to improve. Then we watch how she moves, uses the ball and responds to different football situations.

Her position, club experience and confidence give the practice context. We look for strengths to build on as well as the details that need attention.

A starting point we can explain to her.
02

Plan

Agree a useful next step.

We turn what we have learned into clear priorities. A target should mean something to the player and give her a specific action to practise.

Structured individual programmes use an Individual Development Plan (IDP). In a flexible session, we agree a focused aim. Group players work through challenges suited to their age and stage.

She knows what she is working on and why.
03

Coach · Challenge · Apply

Explain. Practise. Play.

We show the detail, give her time to try it and adjust the challenge as she learns. Practice develops towards the decisions she faces when she plays.

That might mean receiving from a new angle, adding a defender or deciding when to pass instead of dribble. Feedback gives her something clear to try on the next attempt.

A skill she can recognise and use in her game.
04

Review & adapt

Notice progress. Adapt.

We ask what felt different, look at what she can now do and decide what needs more time. Her feedback and experiences in club football help shape the next session.

Flyers and Prestige include monthly reports and progress reviews. Goals can change with her confidence, interests and circumstances; we keep the plan relevant to her.

A next step based on how she is developing.

FROM A GOAL TO THE GAME

What does that
look like in practice?

Explore a sample coaching focus. The starting point, challenge and next step would be adapted to the individual player.

SAMPLE FOCUS · First touch

Receive with a purpose.

Take the first touch towards a useful space, ready for the next action.

“Where could your first touch take you?”A question to help her think
01Notice
Where does the ball go when she receives? Can she see a way to keep it away from pressure?
02Practise
Receive passes from different angles. Try a touch across the body or into space, then add a defender when she is ready.
03Apply
In her next game, look for an opportunity to receive away from an opponent and keep the next pass available.
04Review
Ask which touch helped her keep the ball. Look at direction and control, then decide whether to repeat or change the challenge.

THE PLAYER HAS A VOICE

Challenge her.
Listen to her.

Ambition and enjoyment belong in the same conversation.

Some players want to work towards a higher level. Others want more confidence with their team or time to learn a particular skill. We take those goals seriously and let the player help set the direction.

How we support different learners →

Clear, respectful feedback

We explain the action, show an example and give her another chance to try. A mistake is information we can learn from.

Room to ask and adjust

Tell us if an instruction is unclear, a task feels uncomfortable or she needs a break. We can discuss pace, explanations and practical support.

Goals that can change

School, friendships and interests all matter. We listen when she wants a different focus, a lighter session or time away.

CONNECTED TO HER FOOTBALL

Her development.
Her team. Her family.

STAR provides independent coaching alongside club football. We help her understand and apply what she learns when she is back with her team.

Practical tips for parents →

Parents understand the focus

We explain what we are working on and why, and listen to what you notice. At home, ask what she understood and wants to try; let her share without pressure to analyse every mistake.

Her club game gives it context

We respect her club coach’s team instructions. If advice differs, we can use a football example to explain why another situation might need another solution.

Support matches the programme

Structured programmes include their stated plans and reviews. Season Support adds agreed club training visits and match observations. Explore each programme to see what is included.

START WITH A CONVERSATION

What would help
her game?

Tell us about her football, what she enjoys and where she would like support. We can discuss the right starting point together.

Registration starts the conversation. A place and session arrangements are confirmed with STAR.
